What are research peptides?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Research peptides are those chains manufactured, tested and supplied for use in laboratory experiments rather than as medicines. This article explains what that covers and what it does not.
What a peptide is
A peptide is a chain of amino acids joined by peptide bonds. The usual working definition runs from two residues up to around fifty; longer chains are generally called proteins, though the boundary is a convention rather than a rule. A three-residue chain is a tripeptide, five is a pentapeptide, and so on. Because the sequence determines the shape, and the shape determines what the molecule interacts with, even very short peptides can have highly specific biological activity.
How research peptides are made
Most research peptides are produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis, a method developed by Bruce Merrifield in the 1960s. The chain is built one amino acid at a time on a solid resin support, with protecting groups added and removed at each step so that only the intended bond forms. Once the sequence is complete the peptide is cleaved from the resin, purified — typically by reverse-phase HPLC — and freeze-dried into a lyophilised powder for stability and shipping.
Synthesis is not perfect. Each coupling step has a small failure rate, so the crude product contains truncated and deletion sequences that must be separated out. That is why purity is measured and stated, and why the purification and testing steps matter as much as the synthesis itself.
Why laboratories use them
Peptides are used across the life sciences as tools: to probe a receptor, to act as a reference standard in an assay, to study a signalling pathway, or to investigate how a sequence folds and binds. Because they can be made to order with defined sequences and modifications, they let researchers ask precise questions about biological mechanisms in vitro.
What research-use-only means
A research peptide is sold for in-vitro laboratory work. It is not a medicine, not a supplement and not a cosmetic; it has not been assessed for safety or efficacy in humans or animals and has no marketing authorisation from the MHRA or any other regulator. The classification describes the legal basis of the sale and the purpose the compound may be used for.
